Well the past week has been interesting to say the least, on Monday I interviewed for a position on a roving burn crew for the DNR. Home base would be out of the same office I’m at now, so that was convieneint. The responsibilities would parallel those that I have now. The big thing was that it’s a two year, with the potential of being at least a 6 year position. It’s an in with DNR, where lateral moves will be much easier, and there is a much better chance of promotion…. So on Tuesday morning I found myself accepting the offer for the position. That was pretty quick turn around time, it seems like the norm for people to get back with you is somewhere around 3 weeks. I proceeded to put in my two weeks with The Nature Conservancy. My last day is officially the 25th. I’m excited for several reasons. A focus on prescribed fire/ prairie management, room in the position for professional development, I’m in with the Minnesota DNR, my old boss at the nature conservancy is my new boss with the DNR. That’s my big news for the week.

So it should make for an easy transition from my old position to this one. I may have to begin searching for a new place to stay, since I’m no longer a TNC employee. Since I live in the middle of nowhere that may be a chore, but we’ll see.

It was too wet this week to do any fire, so we worked on a stand of cottonwoods on one of our restorations. In the middle of one of my back cut’s (the cut you make when you are ready for the tree to fall) I noticed the saw zipped through the large tree very easily. After the tree fell I returned to the stump to exam, as is standard practice, and I noticed that this was once someone’s home…. I’m glad for my sake that it had been abandoned.

The honey was moldy so I couldn’t sample it.
That’s all the news I have for now. I’m heading home to get my weekend started. Looks like next week is setting up to be some of our best weather to date, so hopefully that means lots of fire.

I read your post yesterday at Whoomps but didn't comment. Today's comment: Good Deal!
I, personally wouldn't like MN in the winter, but there are folks who do.
Just a little crazy during transition...glad for you.
thanks guys

I think it's cool (and noble) of you to step outside your comfort zone. Literally too, you'll be freezing!
